How much does a tub to shower conversion cost in 2026?

The installed price of a tub to shower conversion in Pensacola, Gulf Breeze, Navarre or Milton depends on your specific bathroom, so this guide doesn’t quote one. Treat any single number you find online as a rough guess rather than a local quote. What you’ll actually pay depends on a handful of things: the wall and base system, the type of entry (including any slab work), the shower valve, the glass, the drain work, the permit, and whatever turns up behind the old tub once it comes out. The sections below walk through each one so you can see where the money goes.

The price of a kit is only one line on the bill. For example, US Supply listed the Sterling Ensemble 72170110-0 four-piece 60 x 30 in. Vikrell shower module at $972.86, and that is a price for the module itself. An installed conversion also involves demo, disposal, plumbing, labor, any required permit, and a glass enclosure if you choose one. That’s why the only number worth planning around is an itemized written quote for your bathroom.

Tile or grout-free panels: what changes the price and the schedule

The wall and floor system sets much of the cost and the schedule. A kit or a grout-free panel system goes up in large finished pieces, while a tile shower is built on site layer by layer. Either one can sit on a prefabricated base or on a custom-built pan. Before you choose a base, have the contractor confirm it fits the existing alcove without framing changes. Ask every bidder what waterproofing layer goes behind and below the finished surface, because that layer is part of what you’re paying for. Ask them to name the waterproofing product or system, where it is installed, and whether it covers the pan-to-wall transition.

With tile, a liquid waterproofing membrane adds steps. Custom Building Products’ data sheet for RedGard, for one, calls for coating corners and seams and at least two coats by roller or brush, with an inspection between coats. LATICRETE’s data sheet for HYDRO BAN, a liquid waterproofing membrane, says the membrane must cure fully before a flood test, and the flood test comes before any tile or stone goes on. For that one product, cure time runs from about 2 hours in warm, drier conditions to about 24 hours in cooler, damper ones, and other membranes have their own schedules. LATICRETE also tells installers to obtain approval from the local building code authority before using the product in shower pan applications. Ask your installer to confirm that the pan waterproofing is accepted by the local building department and that they will follow its cure and flood-test instructions.

For one Swanstone smooth glue-up wall panel, the manufacturer says there is no grout and the panels glue up over the existing surface. We typically sequence a standard grout-free conversion across 3–5 working days and give you that schedule before demo starts. Slab work for a low or curbless entry, or hidden damage behind the old tub, can lengthen it. A tile conversion adds drying time; RedGard’s data sheet, for example, says each coat typically takes 1 to 1.5 hours to dry, and up to 12 hours in high humidity or low temperatures, before the flood test, so ask for a written day-by-day schedule with any tile bid.

Valve, drain and glass: the code items that add cost

The shower valve can change the scope of the job, because the 2023 code has specific requirements for shower control valves. Under the 2023 Florida Building Code, Plumbing, shower control valves must be rated for the flow rate of the installed showerhead, and temperature-limiting devices must be field-adjusted to no more than 120°F. Florida’s plumbing volume was updated using the 2021 International Plumbing Code. That model code’s Section 412.3 calls for balanced-pressure, thermostatic or combination valves installed at the point of use, and it doesn’t accept in-line thermostatic valves for compliance.

Replacing only the trim is a smaller job than replacing the valve body, which means opening the wall. Because of the 2023 valve requirements above, ask the contractor to confirm with the local permitting office whether your existing valve may remain under your permit before pricing the valve as trim-only. If the existing valve leaks, is corroded, isn’t a balanced-pressure, thermostatic or combination valve, or won’t fit the new trim, budget for replacing it.

The drain and the glass have code requirements of their own. The 2023 code added Section 421.3.1, which the Florida Building Commission’s analysis describes as requiring shower waste fittings to meet ASME A112.18.2/CSA B125.2. That section doesn’t tell you whether your existing tub drain line can stay as it is. A licensed plumber or the building department can answer that before you order a base. For glass, the Residential code treats walls next to bathtubs and showers as hazardous locations for glazing, so glass within the code’s limits there must be safety glazing. Ask the building department or your glass installer for the exact height and distance limits. Framed, semi-frameless and frameless enclosures, sliding or hinged doors, and a plain curtain all price differently.

Curbed, low-threshold or curbless: what accessibility really requires

Your shower at home doesn’t have to meet ADA standards, because the ADA does not cover strictly residential private homes; the same source notes that only the parts of a residence used as a public accommodation, such as a doctor’s office, are covered.

The U.S. Access Board’s guide is still a useful planning reference. It permits roll-in shower thresholds up to ½ inch if properly beveled and notes that trench drains and flush entries provide easier access. If you model the shower on its roll-in layout, the guide calls for grab bars on three walls in a standard roll-in shower without a seat, with controls at least 1½ inches above the grab bar. Transfer showers in the guide have a seat and measure exactly 36 inches wide and deep. In dwelling units, the guide lets the seat be left out if the walls are properly reinforced for one to be added later, which is a good argument for adding grab-bar blocking while the walls are open.

A curbless entry involves more than leaving off the curb. The shower floor has to sit low enough to slope to the drain, and on a slab home that can mean cutting and recessing concrete. The Access Board’s standards allow a threshold up to 2 inches only in transfer-type showers in existing facilities where a ½-inch threshold would disturb the slab’s structural reinforcement, while roll-in showers stay at ½ inch. If you want a low or zero entry, ask for any slab or subfloor work as its own line item, covering concrete cutting, any drain relocation, the slope plan, the waterproofing method, dust control and floor patching.

Does a tub to shower conversion need a permit in Escambia or Santa Rosa County?

A conversion is plumbing work, not a cosmetic swap. Escambia County Building Services, citing the Florida Building Code and Florida Statutes, says anyone who wants to alter, repair, remove, convert or replace a regulated plumbing system must first obtain a permit. Its answer covers unincorporated Escambia County. Escambia’s plumbing permit fee estimate form asks for the number of each fixture, listing Bath Tub and Shower separately, along with the cost of construction, and notes that final exact costs are set when the permit application process is completed.

Inside the City of Pensacola, alteration permits are required for bathroom remodels in which all cabinets and plumbing fixtures are being removed, or in which sheetrock will be removed to rough in subtrades. Starting July 1, 2026, the city exempts non-structural work on a single-family dwelling valued under $7,500 from building permits. You apply for the exemption through MGOConnect, and a $40 administrative fee is due once the application is processed. The city’s page doesn’t say whether plumbing work qualifies, so confirm with the city before relying on it.

Navarre homeowners should ask Santa Rosa County’s building department which rules apply to their address. In Gulf Breeze, city and Santa Rosa County permits are separate, and the county can require a permit for work the city itself doesn’t permit, so residents there should check with both the city and the county. We couldn’t confirm Milton’s rules for this article, so residents there should ask their city building department directly whether a tub-to-shower conversion needs a plumbing permit. On our projects, plumbing permits are pulled and the work goes through the city or county inspection that applies to that address.

Notice of Commencement and sales tax

Depending on where you live and the job’s value, you may need a recorded Notice of Commencement before inspections. The City of Pensacola explains that under Chapter 713, Florida Statutes, improvements over $5,000 require a Notice of Commencement filed with the Clerk of Courts, and a copy must be uploaded to the permit project before inspections. Santa Rosa County’s plumbing permit application says the notice must be recorded and posted on the job site before the first inspection.

Local discretionary sales surtax rates are another moving part, so ask each bidder how sales tax is handled on the quote. Santa Rosa County’s discretionary sales surtax for 2026 totals 1%, and the state’s Office of Economic and Demographic Research notes that the county’s 0.5% Local Government Infrastructure Surtax is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2026. A job that runs into 2027 could see a different rate unless the county renews it. For Escambia County, check the Department of Revenue’s current table.

Help paying for an accessible shower

If the conversion is for a disability, the tax rules and a few grant programs may offset part of the cost. IRS Publication 502 says improvements whose main purpose is medical care can be included in medical expenses, reduced by any increase in the home’s value. Bathroom modifications such as support bars made to accommodate a disability usually don’t increase the home’s value, so their cost can be included in full. A tax professional can tell you whether that helps your return.

Veterans have several options. For FY 2026, the VA’s maximum Specially Adapted Housing grant is $126,526 and its maximum Special Home Adaptation grant is $25,350. Those are program caps, not an estimate of what a shower conversion will receive. SHA eligibility requires that the Veteran or a family member own or will own the home, and that the Veteran have a qualifying service-connected disability. The VA’s HISA grant covers medically necessary home improvements and specifically lists roll-in or walk-in showers.

This program may not be available in 2026. Escambia County and the City of Pensacola’s 2022–2025 housing plan offered accessibility grants of up to $10,000 through its owner-occupied repair strategy. Applicants had to be very-low or low-income owner occupants with a homestead exemption, current property taxes and no outstanding liens or judgments owed to the County or City. Call the county or city housing office to ask whether it is still offered.

How to compare quotes

Two quotes are comparable only when both are itemized for the same scope. First, ask whether each quote removes the tub or installs a liner over the existing tub, because those are different jobs. Then check that every quote covers these items:

  • Demo and disposal of the old tub and surround
  • The shower base or pan
  • The wall system
  • The waterproofing layer
  • The valve and trim
  • The drain work
  • The glass enclosure or curtain
  • The permit fees and inspections
  • The cleanup and floor protection
  • The pricing method for hidden damage found after the tub comes out

Get the cleanup terms in writing: who handles floor protection, dust control, daily cleanup and debris removal. We’ve walked into homes where a previous contractor left thinset tracked through the hallway and dust coating every surface in the master bedroom.

Academy Construction is licensed and insured and offers a free in-home consultation. We give you a written scope with itemized pricing and a realistic schedule before demo day. When the job is done, we walk it with you, finish punch list items before final payment, and provide written warranty documentation for our labor along with the manufacturer paperwork.

Before you call anyone, decide whether you want a curb or a low entry and ask each contractor whether the existing valve can remain under the permit and meet the applicable shower-valve requirements. Those two answers shape the scope, and settling them first makes every quote you collect easier to compare line by line.
